Hiking couple rescued near Mount San Jacinto Peak

Two hikers from Culver City who went missing in the Mount San Jacinto wilderness were found uninjured Sunday during a search by deputies of the snowy mountains above Palm Springs, authorities said.

Michael Cao, 56, and his wife, 55-year-old Yi Mei, were found about 1.5 miles below the Mt. San Jacinto Peak around 3:30 this afternoon, said Riverside sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Fredericks.

Cao and Mei started their hike from the Palm Springs Aerial Tram Station and were scheduled to return from before 6 p.m. Saturday, he said.

The two strayed from the trail Saturday and became disoriented at nightfall, so they set up camp for the night and waited for rescue, he said.

The couple’s vehicle was still sitting in the tram station’s desert parking lot, Fredericks said.

Neither of the hikers were injured, and they were both safely escorted to the bottom of the mountain.
